Golden Milk - an anti-inflammatory, antioxidant rich brain booster!
Golden milk - a simple warm drink that has loads of science backed health benefts!
Golden milk gets it's name from the bright yellow spice turmeric which contains the compound curcumin.
Curcumin is a powerful antioxidant with strong anti-inflammatory properties that is also fat soluble. So consuming turmeric with milk, or as part of a dish that has a healthy fat content, helps this lovely golden spice absorb better into your system.
Since chronic inflammation causes many different diseases, golden milk provides a simple, yummy way to help reduce inflammation by including a bit more curcumin in your diet now and then.
Curcumin can also increase brain levels of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), a type of growth hormone that can help delay age-related decreases in brain function.
Golden milk is easy to make and a great after dinner beverage as it also aids digestion! For a single serving of golden milk just follow this recipe:
Ingredients:
1 cup (120ml) of an unsweetened milk of your choice
1 tsp of turmeric
1 small piece of grated fresh ginger (or 1/2 tsp of ginger powder - if in a rush)
1/2 tsp of cinnamon powder
1 pinch of ground black pepper
1 tsp of honey ** or maple syrup (optional)
Directions:
Bring milk to a boil in a small saucepan over medium heat.
Lower heat and add ginger, cinnamon and black pepper.
Simmer for 5 minutes.
Remove from heat and strain off any solids (optional)
** Only add honey once milk has cooled to a drinkable temperature. Heating honey at high temperatures causes it to become very hard for the body to digest completely and can affect the digestive tract long term.
