When Stress Turns into Anxiety, And How to Stop the Cycle
How To Stop The Stress-Anxiety Cycle
Stress doesn’t just stay stress. For many of us, it turns into something more: anxiety that hijacks our thoughts, our breath, and eventually, our health. Here’s how to stop the stress-anxiety cycle so you can take back control.
I’ve worked with countless people stuck in a cycle they can’t seem to escape, feeling anxious all the time, unsure where it even started. And what I’ve found is this: the first step isn’t doing more. It’s noticing more.
Stress Is the Spark, But Anxiety Is the Fire
Stress is a normal part of life. But when we don’t release it when it piles up and triggers constant worry or fear, it mutates into anxiety. Thoughts start racing. Worst-case scenarios loop. And suddenly, you’re in a spiral.
What makes this harder? Often, anxiety doesn’t feel like a moment anymore. It feels like a default. Everything becomes a trigger. You can’t remember what it feels like to not be on edge.
That’s when it’s time to pause and say: What’s really going on inside me?
🧘♀️ Awareness Comes First
You can’t fix what you can’t feel. So before you reach for a solution, reach for awareness.
Notice when anxiety shows up in your body.
Is your breath shallow?
Is your heart racing?
Is your chest tight?
Those physical signals? They’re your early warning system. And once you tune into them, you can intervene before the spiral starts.
Why Breathwork Is Key to Stop the Stress-Anxiety Cycle
When stress floods your nervous system, your breath is your reset button.
And here’s the simplest, most effective way to press it:
✅ Inhale for 6 counts.
✅ Exhale for 8 (or even 9) counts.
✅ Repeat, slowly, saying in your mind: “I’m inhaling… I’m exhaling.”
This tells your body: You’re safe. You’re in control.
It’s fast. It’s free. And it works anywhere in traffic, before a meeting, or in a tense conversation.
The Mind-Body Connection in the Stress Anxiety Cycle
Anxiety lives not just in the mind, but in the body. If you’ve been in a prolonged state of stress, it doesn’t just affect your mood, it also affects your health.
Ongoing stress and overwhelm can contribute to health challenges like heart strain, fatigue, or burnout, as well as:
Metabolic diseases like diabetes and obesity
Autoimmune disorders
Cardiovascular issues
This is why I teach what I call the Trifecta Method:
Movement. Breath. Guided relaxation.
It works on all levels—mental, physical, and emotional.
But if you can only do one? Start with the breath.
It’s the one tool you always have with you.
5 Practical Steps to Stop the Stress-Anxiety Cycle
If anxiety has been running the show, here are 5 steps to begin flipping the script:
🧭 Build awareness: Start noticing your physical anxiety signals.
🌬️ Use extended exhale breathwork daily, even when calm.
🧘♀️ Move your body gently to release stored tension.
🎧 Try guided meditations to calm the nervous system.
⏱️ Practice in calm moments, so it’s second nature when stress hits.
My Turning Point
There was a time I felt like I was never anxious. The idea of control felt far away. But learning to listen to my body, catching the signs early, gave me my power back. Breath by breath, I came home to myself. And now I help others do the same.
Anxiety doesn’t have to run your life.
With awareness and a few simple tools, you can take the lead again.
